In order to get to Vieques you will need to:

Please note: although we have done both, we found that flying is far more convenient. But for those who hate flying in small planes (hi Mom!), the ferry is a perfectly acceptable alternative.

If you don't want to bother with details, you can book flights directly to Vieques (the airport code is VQS) on, or, however that may not be the most cost-effective. We have found that JetBlue (and many other major airlines, i.e. Delta, American and Continental) tends to have inexpensive flights to San Juan (airport code SJU) and then you can either book a separate flight to Vieques through one of the smaller local Puerto Rican airlines (see below) or take the ferry (see sidebar). We have found that the prices vary even from week to week, and while we highly recommend getting your flights early, it is possbile to get a last minute deal to San Juan.

(TIP: Rates may be cheaper if your dates are flexible.)

**SPECIAL NOTE Please arrange your flight to ensure enough time for travel to Fajardo to catch the ferry or to coordinate your flight to the island.

Most of the smaller local flights to Vieques do not fly after 5pm. If you are arriving close to or later than 5pm and wish to fly, you may want to stay overnight one night in San Juan and take an early flight over the next day.

Local Island Airlines to Vieques:
Many travelers fly to Vieques from San Juan on Cape Air or Vieques Air Link. Round-trip fare runs rroughly $160. Here is a list of airlines:

To your hotel or Car Rental
Publico vans (taxis) at the dock in Isabel Segunda, Vieques (where your ferry lands) can take you to your inn or apartment for $5 or less. If you are flying into Vieques, you can take a Publico to either your hotel or car rental location.
Also, if you rent a house for the week, the house manager will often pick you up from the ferry or airport and bring you to your house.

We strongly urge you to leave your valuables at home as luggage does sometimes get lost. Also, while Vieques is very safe in general, it does have trouble with petty theft. Please travel light and leave the electronics and expensive jewelry at home!

The ferry leaves from Fajardo, which is on the
eastern end of Puerto Rico. You will need to
take a cab from the airport (approx. $50-65)
to Fajardo. The drive takes about an hour and
15 minutes. Click here for information on
two cab companies that specialize
in this trip.

From Fajardo, go to the ticket counter across the
street from the ferry terminal for your tickets,
then take the ferry to Vieques. The ferry takes an hour, costs $2 each way, and runs four times a day.

Vieques Port -787-741-4761
Fajardo Port -787-863-0705 or 863-4761

One caveat!  From your arrival time at the San Juan Airport, allow at least 2 hrs. to collect your luggage and make the trip to Fajardo. If the last ferry doesn't work into this calculation, you can try Vieques Air Link from Fajardo or stay overnight at the Fajardo Inn. If you like to gamble and don't mind spending a few bucks, stay at El Conquistador. Again, you may need reservations.

If you can coordinate with a group, a charter
flight is a great option. Last year we booked
with Air America and they were wonderful! You
end up avoiding the lines, and with a group it
ended up being less expensive than the
regular flight. If you plan on coming for the
week, check with Jodi as we will be booking
charters for that time period.
